First imported from Kurume, Japan, into Europe and includes the famous 'Wilson's Fifty'
The Akashi Kourakuen Nursery exhibited them at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. The famous plant collector E. H. Wilson visited the nursery in 1918 and selected and introduced 50 cultivars (bred by Motozou Sakamoto and fellow enthusiasts) to the Arnold Arboretum
