Hyd. paniculata
Panicle hydrangeas, spectacular hydrangeas never disappoint – also known as peegee hydrangeas, hardy hydrangeas. A vigorous, upright, rapid-growing, somewhat coarsely textured, deciduous shrub that is native to China and Japan. It typically grows to 8-15’ (less frequently to 25’) tall, and features oval to ovate dark green leaves and upright, sharply-pointed, conical, terminal flower panicles (to 6-8” long) containing both fertile and sterile flowers mostly non-showy fertile flowers) that bloom, may open pale green, grading to white with age, creating a pleasing “two-tone” effect from mid-summer into fall.
If you site is sunny (and hot) Hy. paniculata form are better, thrives in all day sun (min. 4 hr a day) as long as it receives adequate moisture if it a small tree shape already you should provide extra bracing & support for the tree the first year or two. This will help the tree remain upright,
The
white flowering Hydrangea paniculata varieties are the best able to grow and
remain attractive in full sun. Varieties such as ‘Grandiflora,’ ‘Limelight’ and
‘Pinky Winky’ will turn pink as they age, but the flowers won’t brown out as
long as they are well watered through hot weather.
