The name ‘Azaleodendron’ was used by Rodigas in 1892 for hybrids between the Japanese azalea R. japonicum (the Azalea mollis of gardens) and various Hardy Hybrid rhododendrons, raised at Ghent a few years previously, Since then it has been used to name elepidotes crossed azaleas
